Angharad Williams

Angharad Williams’s interdisciplinary practice includes installations, performance, film, text, and (as shown in her recent exhibition Eraser at the Kunstverein, her first institutional solo show in Germany) drawings. Her work often takes the everyday as a starting point for revealing socially rooted outlooks and convictions. Subsequently, the objects shown at the Kunstverein (including the Cars of the eponymously titled series of drawings) are not meant to be taken at face value; instead, they serve to draw our attention to the underlying systems of classification that construct our reality. Williams’s work consistently and targetedly confronts viewers with individual prejudices, desires, and fears, exposing the fragility of their constructed present. She has created her edition for the Kunstverein using paper test strips, supplied by perfumeries and their concession stands in department stores or duty free shops for testing the perfumes on offer; the artist has been collecting these since 2019 and has preserved their scents. For Wunderbaum, Williams has combined different varieties of these test strips in the shape of a pine tree, furnished with a ribbon for hanging. This double-sided and oversized “air freshener” evokes associations with the smaller versions that are still used in many cars.
