Set and Twist. verräumlichte Beziehungsgefüge
With Eva Birkenstock (Director, Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf) and Katrin Mayer

The artist Katrin Mayer in turn developed a display made of assembled vertical and horizontal surfaces which are overwritten with archival materials, artworks, artifacts, and texts, as well as art historical analyses and new artistic productions. In this interplay between individual spatialized clusters of material, the history of the building – and thus also that of the Kunstverein – is activated as a continuously shifting provisional framework for various interrelated temporalities and architextures. During the guided tour Katrin Mayer will give insights in her work and together with Eva Birkenstock she will talk about the developing process of the exhibition.

Katrin Mayer studied fine arts in Karlsruhe and Hamburg. In her work she deals with interfaces between art, research, architecture, display and decor. She is interested in connecting visual textures and surfaces with site-specific and historic contexts, often in political and gender context. She is currently writing her PhD thesis about this topic area at HfbK, Hamburg. Mayer developed works for the following institutions: Kunstverein Hamburg; Kunsthalle Lingen; Ludlow38 MINI/Goethe-Institut, New York; Kunsthalle Bielefeld; Kunstmuseum Stuttgart; Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach and the KUB Arena at Kunsthaus Bregenz.

The event accompanies the exhibition Asymmetrische Architexturen – Lektüren zur Nachkriegsgeschichte des Kunstvereins, on view at Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf through October 8, 2017.
