Fingers wiggle
Hands open
Blood runs up and down inside the arms

Into the HEART
Open heart pumping blood out

To the belly button, all genitals, and brain

Let GO
Legs move to find the rhythm
Any rhythm that flows with the energy

In this moment
Present, now, here
Close the eyes
Connecting
Smells leak out the pores

Sweat secreting

Glowing beautiful people
Let´s DANCE

Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf, is pleased to present Physical Education IV: Digital Release, the fourth iteration of its ongoing Elbow Room series, on Friday, March 13, 2020, at 10.15 PM. Since July 2019, Elbow Room has been activating the architecture in and around the Kunstverein as a transitory space with performances, open rehearsals, workshops, physical introductions, artist talks, readings, and concerts. For Physical Education IV, JCDM – a collaboration of music and sound based in New York – will debut a performative Digital Release at Salon des Amateurs while invoking the music live, using body, voice, and instrumentation.
Elbow Room has been conceived as a performative extension of the Kunstverein’s former Schaufenster (display window). Elbow Room generates temporary, physically variable, intermediary spaces to explore a range of differing performative staging formats. The stairs in the entrance, the Kunstverein’s foyer, parts of the exhibition space itself, as well as the adjacent Salon des Amateurs and its urban surroundings are transformed into sites of Physical Education. Inspired by the idea of understanding the body and its organs as flexible, decentralized, diverse entities, the title alludes to the potential of physically generating spaces for action and performance. The elbow, in this sense, becomes a catalyst for stretching and physical exercises that aim to create spaces of agency, which, at the Kunstverein, offer preliminary insights into performative research and production processes, as well as temporary stages for first showings of performance-based work. Elbow Room, Physical Education IV with JCDM is being curated by Eva Birkenstock in collaboration with Gesa Hüwe.

Admission 4 Euro. Reduced 2 Euro. Members are free.
